thieves. abc2 news sherrie johnson is here with what's being done to protect this product. this is a bizarre story. >> reporter: it is bizarre is the correct word. and you know, what it's an emerging trend across the country. tide detergeent is being traded -- detergeent is reportedly being -- deturningened is -- detergent is reportedly being trayed for drugs. with retail prizes 20 bucks a bottle they are cashing in stealing it and selling it for 5 to 10 dollars a bottle. it's so popular some cvs stores are putting security device on the tide. one man swiped 25,000 dollars worth of tide over several months before he was arrested. authorities say thieves target tide because it is so popular and it is popping orange logo makes it instantly recognizable. >> it's crazy. are the prices going up? i don't get why people are stealing it.
